Major Urological Milestone reached at Rama Hospital, Hapur

- Dr Manjul Kumar, Consultant Urologist

The urology department at Rama Hospital, Hapur reached a major urological milestone by successfully performing a Radical Cystectomy with Ileal Conduit Urinary Diversion, one of the most complex and extensive procedures in urologic oncology.

Radical cystectomy with ileal conduit urinary diversion is a major surgery where the bladder is removed due to cancer or other serious conditions. After the bladder is taken out, a new way for urine to leave the body is created using a piece of the small intestine. This piece is connected to the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys and is brought out to the belly as a small opening, allowing urine to drain into a bag outside the body.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Manjul Kumar, Associate Professor of Urology, along with a dedicated multidisciplinary surgical and anesthesia team. Radical cystectomy is a highly demanding and technically challenging operation that involves the complete removal of the urinary bladder along with surrounding tissues and regional lymph nodes. It is most commonly performed for muscle-invasive bladder cancer or other high-risk bladder conditions.

Following removal of the bladder, a urinary diversion must be meticulously created to allow the body to eliminate urine. In this case, an ileal conduit was constructed using a carefully isolated segment of the small intestine. The ureters were connected to this intestinal segment, which was then brought out to the abdominal wall as a stoma, providing a safe and effective pathway for urine drainage.
This long and intricate surgery requires advanced surgical expertise, precise anatomical knowledge, and coordinated teamwork, as it combines oncological clearance with complex reconstructive urinary diversion in a single procedure.

The operation was completed successfully, and the patient recovered well under close postoperative monitoring. This accomplishment reflects the hospital’s growing strength in performing major oncological and reconstructive urological surgeries, ensuring that patients can receive high-level specialised care locally without the need for referral to distant tertiary centres.
“Performing a radical cystectomy with ileal conduit is one of the most challenging procedures in urology, requiring precision, teamwork, and advanced surgical skills. Our successful outcome reflects the dedication of our entire team and our commitment to providing world-class care to our patients right here in Hapur.”
