World Down Syndrome Day

Severalpeople in the world are suffering from Down Syndrome and are unable to livehappy and normal life. World Down Syndrome Day is observed on 21stMarch every year to provide guidance and support to such people who are unableto take care of themselves due to problems in the nervous system. Down Syndromeis a disease associated with brain non-functioning of one or more organs due tothe presence of an extra chromosome in our DNA. An individual with Downsyndrome inherits all or part of an extra copy of Chromosome 21. Symptomsassociated with the syndrome include mental retardation, distinctive facialcharacteristics, and increased risk for heart defects and digestive problems,which can range from mild to severe. A study by United Nations reveals thatapproximately 3000 to 5000 children are born with this chromosome disorder.Although, it is seen that 1 out of 700 babies is found suffering from thisdisorder, however, the total number of cases is severe and rising throughoutthe year. There is no significant diagnosis or treatment for this disorder.However, there are some common health concerns which are observed inindividuals suffering from Down Syndrome which include anxiety,obsessive-compulsive behaviour, oppositional behaviour, depression and ticdisorder.

The day isobserved to create mass awareness among people to treat specially-abled peoplesuffering from Down Syndrome as a part of society and provide them with equalopportunity in every phase of their life. It has been observed that peoplesuffering from Down Syndrome require care, attention and empathy from societywhich they don’t get usually. Most people are discriminated against and areconsidered unfit for society. World Down Syndrome Day brings a sense of empathyand togetherness among people around them to look after such people who arehaving Down Syndrome. Additionally, it highlights the importance of society andthe people around them which can act as social support for children sufferingfrom Down Syndrome.
