Dr Vaibhav, from Rama Medical College, represented the Indian Medical Community by presenting an innovative anaesthesia technique at the International Health Congress Summit held in Rome, Italy, on June 5-7, 2020. His clinical case study entitled “Paravertebral Block with Liposomal Bupivacaine for Enhanced Recovery Following Open Thoracotomy” provided evidence of a new method of alleviating pain from open thoracotomies, which are generally associated with high levels of post-surgical pain and significant delays in recovery from surgery.
Dr Vaibhav demonstrated that using Liposomal Bupivacaine as a targeted regional anaesthesia could change the way that pain relief is administered to patients following surgery. He presented data that showed an overall decrease in the use of opioids by patients who received paravertebral blocks with the addition of Liposomal Bupivacaine; patients were able to ambulate more quickly following surgery; and they were able to recover from surgery faster than patients who did not receive paravertebral blocks with Liposomal Bupivacaine, providing a greater level of patient comfort and safety while recovering from thoracic surgery.
Dr Vaibhav received an overwhelmingly positive response and support from members of the International Medical Community for his presentation made at the summit. This type of recognition supports the need for the current use of regional techniques for pain management in the surgical suite today. His research indicates a change in the direction of the current mode of patient care, moving towards an opioid-sparing method of patient care and establishing the foundation for best practices in enhanced recovery protocols worldwide.
Aside from his involvement in medicine, the Rome Summit was an important event in how the world collaborates across borders regarding medical care. The participation of Dr Vaibhav helped elevate India’s contribution towards anaesthesia standards globally and inspire a new generation of clinicians to innovate and share knowledge across national boundaries.
Dr Vaibhav has opened up new opportunities for future collaborative research and knowledge exchange at the Rome Summit, particularly in relation to regional anaesthesia and enhanced recovery. Through his engagement with researchers from leading institutions worldwide, he has positioned the Rama Medical College as an emerging centre of innovation and academic excellence. As a result of such global exposure, not only do these types of collaborative efforts enhance the capacity of institutions, but they also provide patients within India with direct access to the most recent advances in perioperative care that have been validated through rigorous scientific investigation.
