World Leprosy Day- Act Now. End Leprosy

2023-01-30

What is Leprosy?

Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease named after the person Dr. Gerhard Arnauer

Hansen (who was searching for the unknown bacteria in the skin nodules of lepers), is a

disease which is causing a significant impact on the life of people. The disease is caused by

the infection of slow-growing bacteria called Mycobacterium Leprae which affects the

nerves, skin, eyes, as well as other facial muscles resulting in progressive disabilities. It is a

curable disease which requires keen attention, observation and treatment from doctors to

ensure that the disease is not further transmitted to others and prevent it from causing damage

to the patient.

How to find a cure?

People suffering from this disease are always advised to receive a thorough check-up from

doctors and get medical treatment such as BCG vaccines as well as a course of medicines

which helps in permanent cure to the disease. Small children are also required to get their full

course of vaccines as prescribed by doctors to prevent any serious illness from this disease in

future.

World Leprosy day

Every year on the last Sunday of January, World Leprosy Day is celebrated with a motive to

educate and spread awareness among people to come together and prevent the spread of this

disease. This year on Sunday 29th January 2023, the day is going to be celebrated having a

theme of “Act Now. End Leprosy” which is based on three key messages:

 Elimination is possible: We have the power and tools to stop transmission and defeat

this disease.

 Act now: We need the resources and commitment to end leprosy. Prioritize leprosy

elimination.

 Reach the unreached: Leprosy is preventable and treatable. Suffering from leprosy is

needless.

There is a need of educating people that the disease is not an easily transmittable disease and

modern technology and medicines are able to cure and prevent the disease. It is high time that

people should understand the severity of the disease and work as a team with medical and

research institutes to achieve the target of 120 countries with zero new autochthonous leprosy

cases by 2030.

Rama Hospital at Kanpur is also progressive towards organising healthcare campaigns where

a team of esteemed specialist doctors are envisioned to spread mass awareness and take

routine check-ups of people suffering from such diseases as well as educate people to prevent

suffering from such diseases in future.
